1. Your Acceptance
By using this website you are agreeing to these terms and conditions of use. In particular,
your attention is drawn to the Intellectual Property Rights (section 3). If you do not agree to
these terms, please do not use the website.
2. The VSA site
This site may contain links to third parties that VSA does not own or control and, therefore
assumes no responsibility for the actions or terms of these sites. By using the VSA site, you
relinquish the VSA of any and all liability arising from the use of your information by a third
party website. All site-users should respect the intellectual property of those who have
contributed data or own the copyright to material held on the site. In any secondary use of
material held on the VSA you should acknowledge the VSA, the users and contacts who
submitted the material to the VSA together with any additional information required by that
content. Otherwise all data is freely available to all to download and use.
3. Intellectual property rights
A. At all times, you are expected to respect the intellectual property rights of
information that you contribute to this site and/or use from it.
By agreeing to these terms, you understand that the VSA site cannot guarantee any
confidentiality with respect to submissions.
B. In any secondary use of material held on the VSA you should acknowledge the VSA, the
users and contacts who submitted the material to the VSA together with any additional
information required by that content.
C. If you submit material for inclusion in the VSA, you shall be solely responsible for the
ownership of your submissions, and the consequences that might arise from publishing them
onto the VSA site. In connection with contributing material to the site, you warrant that you:
(1) own or have the necessary permission, rights, licenses, and consents to permit the VSA to
publish the material (in all data formats) provided; (2) have the consent and release of each
additional person who has contributed to the material provided, and that you have their
permission to agree to these terms on their behalf; (3) you provide VSA (and its successors)
with permission to make accessible your contribution without limitation within the terms and
conditions for users of the site.
D. You further agree that you will not (1) submit material that is copyrighted, protected by
trade secret, or otherwise subject to third party propriety unless you own these rights or have
the permission of their rightful owner to contribute the material to the VSA site; (2) submit
material that is obscene, unlawful, libelous or threatening, or an infringement on the rights of
others.
E. By agreeing to these terms, you understand that any breach of these terms shall result in
material being removed from the VSA site and that you may be prohibited from providing
further information to the VSA.
F. If you are permitted, through the VSA site, to access links to software on the website, this
is for personal, non-commercial use only.
4. Removal of material
The VSA retains the right to withdraw any part of the service of its site without notice.
If you wish specific material to be removed from the VSA (for example you believe that your
intellectual property rights have been infringed by a member who up-loaded the image) you
should contact the VSA Administrative Group directly.
APPENDIX
Definitions
The Virtual Seismic Atlas (VSA) –
A computer-based resource that is a depository for the geological interpretation of seismic
and other relevant material, together with appropriate seismic data that underpin the
interpretations. The server is hosted in the University of Leeds. Data (see below) hosted on
the VSA is freely available for all to view and download via the VSA website. It is in effect an
electronic publishing house for geological interpretations of seismic data. Materials are meta-tagged
by data donors and through relationships to other material on the site. VSA users may
access data using a variety of search strategies. Submission of data to the VSA is either by
the VSA Administrative Group and its development team or directly by registered VSA members.
VSA Administrative Group -
This is the management team for the VSA, the members of which are clearly identified on the
VSA web site. The Administrative Group may change the definitions and Terms and Conditions at any
time, although in general it would be expected to consult with the VSA Advisory Group. The
present members of the Administrative Group are
Rob Butler, Bill McCaffrey and Taija Torvela.
VSA Advisory Group -
These individuals, drawn from the key stakeholder communities for the VSA, are appointed by
the VSA Administrative Group. They will meet from time to time to advise on VSA content
coverage, and developmental priorities. The expectation is that Advisory Group members will
promote the VSA amongst the community at large.
VSA Patrons –
Appointed by the VSA Administrative Group to promote and foster the VSA within outside
communities. Patrons are de facto members of the VSA Advisory Group.
Basic acknowledgement –
A basic acknowledgement is required should you decide to use any data downloaded from
the VSA. This should include the name(s) of individuals and/or organisations that provided the
particular data to the VSA, as indicated in the notes that accompany all items. You should
also acknowledge the VSA (a logo is available on the “About” page of the VSA web site for you to use in presentations etc.).
VSA data
Any material held by the VSA and lodged on its server is termed data. A non-exhaustive list of
types of data includes: all graphics and image files such as images of seismic profiles,
interpretations of seismic profiles, visualizations and movie clips. Data also can include
supplementary textural information, including any meta-data associated with files. Data also
includes basic seismic files (SEG-Y). The Administrative Group reserves the right to remove any
data from the VSA without notice or reason at any time.
