Minibasin above mobile Messinian salt , floor of Ionian Sea Scene

VSA Author: Rob Butler
Interpretations: 1
Date Created: 2008-02-16

Extensional minibasin formed above a mobile substrate (Messinian evaporites?) on the floor of the Ionian Sea. The interpretation here follows a model of extensional flow in the underlying Messinian evaporires. Alternatively the faulting and basin may couple with active basement faulting in the Ionian lithosphere.

Extensional minibasin, floor of Ionian Sea - interpreted Interpretation

VSA Author: Rob Butler
Date Created: 2008-02-16

Minibasin formed above a mobile substrate (Messinian evaporites?) on the floor of the Ionian Sea. The growth strata show classic dip-fan behaviour with divergence of reflectors towards the inferred fault/fault zone (which is complex).
